My parents’ first mistake was myname.
Jessica. One of the most popular names of the latter 21st century. Market saturation. Consumer confusion. Overall: Â a clear branding misstep.
Their second mistake was the TV.
Banned. Commercial TV. Or TV in general.Consumerism for the masses, meant to rot my brain. It turned into a spectacular backfire. I loved TV, loved commercials, loved the little stories that could be conjured or skewed in the tight real-estate of thirty seconds.
A decade into making ads, I still love it. Turning insight into soundbite. Squeezing a big-picture strategy into a six-word headline. Creating a fresh voice for a brand, whether it’s for an 8-year-old girl or an 80-year-old car company, is satisfying as hell.
Thanks, mom.
